2012 Holiday Collection
An exclusive preview from Forest Stearns

Welcome, deviantARTGear Watchers & MORE!

New to the deviantART T-Shirts & Gear team, we'd like to introduce Forest Stearns ($draweverywhere), Art Director of deviantART Brands. Forest is excited to offer you an insider preview today and share how our brand new Holiday 2012 Collection (which launches this week!) evolved from concept to reality.

From: $draweverywhere

Hello, my friends!

I'm excited to tell you about a huge project we’ve been working on that's finally going to see the light of day (or your computer screens) this week! For the first time, deviantART will be launching a full season of product to the site all at once, and I've had the pleasure of orchestrating the creative development of this line

First, I'm thrilled to meet you. My job here at dA is split between artistic direction and hands-on illustration. It's been a challenge and a blast! My background is in making art and working with other artists on collaborative graphic illustrations. I’ve been a member of deviantART for over 6 years now, and since my first project with dA -- performing as a Live Artist at the Pacific Festival over a year ago -- I moved into a full-time role and am enjoying the challenge.

CMYRead about the creation of CMY. Click here to see the process journal.

Now, let me tell you what we've been cooking up these last few industrious months. The Holiday 2012 Collection has a vast reach that spans many genres and themes in art. It's an artistic adventure you can wear. Every piece has a story, and we look forward to walking you through the creative process of how each design was executed in the coming weeks. Be sure to +Watch £deviantARTGear so you don’t miss out on the insider look at how this apparel collection came to be.

a href="deviantartgear.deviantart.com/…">Movie TimeRead about the creation of Movie Time. Click here to see the process journal.

Why tell you the story behind each and every design?  As artists and appreciators, we rarely get an intimate glimpse into the steps that brought a piece of art to life. Sharing the story creates a conversation that's fundamental to artistic education. I hope that telling the tale of each design will help breed artistic success through the sharing of experiences. Every piece had a journey from the first creative kernel to its final printed end on a wearable canvas. So we are going to pair up designs with the stories of their creation in an effort to add value. That way, you'll not only own the garment in its finished stage; you'll be able to connect to its artistic journey. Hopefully, the combination of illustration and the process narrative will create a new understanding that concept or technique couldn't do alone.

Sunset Burner

So, what's this collection all about? It's really about the diversity of deviantART and how the love of making art brings us together. Our goal was to offer many well-crafted illustrations that support deviantART’s core values of inspiration, education, and entertainment. The dynamic range truly evolved from theme to theme because of a desire to speak many artistic dialects. The Holiday 2012 Collection is based on honest artwork that pushes the limits and is open to extreme possibilities. Many subject matters were explored for which a number of media types could be applied. The illustrations are bold and gritty, full of energy, dynamic contrast, and stylized character. Whether monochromatic, acid neon, textured, flat, pitch black, or glow-in-the-dark, there's contrast throughout.

It was also important to create pieces that could stand individually, but worked as a series. The designs range from playful exaggerated characters and stylized handwritten fonts to works in fundamental art theory and color science. The character illustrations are a mash-up of the interesting people I see in everyday life, while the letter-based pieces celebrate the beauty of typography and strength of powerful statements. Every piece influenced the next and many rounds of revisions were necessary in order to ensure the design was strong, the concept interesting, and the visual language cohesive.

Sound Waves

I draw every day. It's my drug of choice. The more you learn, the more you see, the more you use, the more you practice. Creative problem-solving and exploring new techniques keep the "job" part of the work lively and interesting. The joy is in the journey, right?

Monster Talk

We hope you find the process journals of each piece educational, inspirational, and entertaining. Perhaps it will be a catalyst for you to make artworks and share your own processes with us and others.

Never Normal

Without making you wait too much longer, I'm proud to announce that this Holiday 2012 Collection will be available in the next two days and just in time for the holidays!  Get them early for yourself or your homies. I'm certainly looking forward to having my own set!

There seem to be some questions about the intent of this collection. Per Forest's journal above, "Our goal was to offer many well-crafted illustrations that support deviantART’s core values of inspiration, education, and entertainment." We are loving your comments and appreciating all of your feedback.

Hmm, too much street-art for my taste, stuff you allready can find in all these other tees-shops out there. I would like to see some classical designs back.

Street are is currently a very important global art movement, and with a few of these designs we are very interested in being part of that exciting conversation. Thanks!

I mean the older design which were aviable here, for example the red one with the dA-wing or the brown llhama shirt. DeviantArt had some t-shirts which you can only buy here, own - for the webside - typical ideas (especially the llama). The new ones aren't bad, but they looking like designs you can find on the most other tees-shop too. Street-art is not bad, but all seems to be street art now, it lacks the humor and self-esteem of the webside of their origin, deviantArt. I think it would be better to create designs which shown where they come from, in addition to designs without the logo, but with fresh ideas. To use (for example) a airplane is not new, adding pencils and stuff therefore just an addition to an existing design. The recycling-pen-idea was more fresh (in my opinion).
DeviantArt seems to try to compensate with the internet-culture, but should create a part of thise culture instead.
I've bought some of the old shirts here because they shown the affiliation to deviantArt, mostly without showing it too directly. Like the llama shirt, which is for the most out there just an animal, and one, which aren't very populated on t-shirts. A typical idea based here. The red-wing design was also fine, not too much, but not too less. The viewer had a point where to look without too much other things arount it. The black one (with the fractur/textur-letter) were also ok.
What I try to say is, that my favourite shirts (the llama, red-wing and recycling-pencil-ones) are fine because they have a meaning, an affiliation and idea behind it. Llma-dA related animal, wing- well placed composition with dA symbol but also other design aspects, not too advertisable, and pencil- the never ending passion for art.
The airplane is also a idea based on art, the same way the pencils are in the recycling order. But the pencils itself create the symbol, the airplane just have them instead of weapons.
If deviantArt want to compete with other tees-shops they are on a loosing side, because they are so much out there which create similiar stuff. I think it would be better to show, integrate and visualisize what the community of dA is, create and like. The pepper-shirts for example. Classic design means the spirit of dA, unique elements (I know it is hard), things you wouldn't find in every other shop. And printing an llama on a shirt is not so easily to find.
The actual designs aren't related to dA, they mostly imitate an art style or general idea of art. Which is not bad, but allready there.
The pencil sharpener for example, is just a pencil-sharpener. It could be printed in every other shop around. Add an symbol of dA, and it changes it a bid, add a bunch of llamas who ride on the pencils around make it unique. I not try to say that everything need to show an dA symbol or related stuff (please don't) but should show the idea behind art, not just art itself. The things which are in the mind of the artists, their ideas and fears, working manners and typcial humoric situations you can ran into. Such stuff. Not just art styles or things to create art.
Hope that helps^^

This is indeed very helpful. I think a lot of the intention was to celebrate art and the tools used to make art. Forest himself is an artist by trade and the goal was to make pieces that are well-crafted, follow current market trends, but also have a very special connection to art in its most fundamental state. We hope that the process journals, which release on each piece will give some insight as to why each of the designs were chosen. We will certainly share your feedback within the team as we embark on the next season. Thanks.

With this collection our target was very broad so to include many tastes in theme, media, and subject matter. Hopefully the pieces will resonate for those who love making art and enjoying it's exploratory nature.

You sound like you remember everything your art teachers taught you - except how to apply it. Target was broad? no, I think it's aimed towards the kids that want to spray graffiti... it's the art, I'm not puting it down so don't blow a nut. Many tastes? no... to me many tastes would be Norman Rockwell, Frazetta, Picasso, van gogh, michelangelo.... all different style and MEDIA ... Media is the same in all the pictures too, same style... now, before you the reader get bent and feel like sending me hate mail, remember, we all got taught by other artists in our life - I'm just trying to educate this young man he knows what he was taught, he says it in his words, but it's not applied. ...Here is another example of MANY TASTES IN THEME, MEDIA AND SUBJECT: make something black and white. Make something super colorful. make something that pops like 3D. Make something that is FLAT... make something that is bright. Make something that is dark.... I did not write this to get hate mail, I wrote it so any artist that reads this they understand what "Many Tastes" are - like Rock'n'roll, country, jazz, pop.... it's got a different flavor. Personally, you wouldn't catch me wearing any of this... I think it is MASH art... Mash art is where you put something together quick to stop the bleeding....It's like going to a tattoo artist and asking him to put a perfect circle on you and he juat started learning how to tat. Remember to call this MASH ART - LOL - I just invented the term make it grow - lol

I loved a lot of the old designs because they were things that nobody else had. The art zombie, the quit work series, the old skool photography shirt. I'd love to see a fella forbidden shirt. Shirts that are about DA. Not A lot of the other deviant art logo t-shirts with cool colorful graphics. Lately, these t-shirts I've been seeing are moving more towards street art, graffiti, and abstract. That isn't bad per se, but you're alienating one fan base (the art nerds who really liked the quirky t-shirts in the collection) to gain another.

I think it'd be cool to sort of have a quarterly sort of shirt sale where people could purchase one or more of your older t-shirts that have been discontinued. And your new designs don't seem like holiday designs. They just seem new. I'm not particularly fond of the art style either.
